RULES FOR USING THE T TEST AND THE Z TEST:

1. If σ is known, use the z test. The variable must be normally distributed if n<30.
2. If σ is unknown but n is n is >30, use the z test and use S in place of  σ in the formula.
3. If σ is unknown n<30, use the t test. (the population must be approximately normally distributed)
