SQUARING SHORTCUTS

Squaring numbers can be fun and easy. Here are some shortcuts to help you:

SQUARING A NUMBER ENDING IN 0

Squaring whatever number comes before zero, then double the zeros.

Example 1: 80 is the number you want to square  → Square the nonzero number.
8 x 8 = 64
Double the zeros.
00
Answer: 6400
Example 2: 1200 is the number you wan to square → Square the nonzero numbers.
12 x 12 = 144
Double the zeros.
0000
Answer: 1 440 000


SQUARING A NUMBER BETWEEN 11 AND 19 

Example 1: 17 is the number you wan to square.
Step 1: Square the ones digit
17^2 7 x 7 = 49
Use the 9.
Carry the 4.
Step 2: Multiply the ones digit by 2.
17^2 → 7 x 2 = 14
Use the 4.
Add the first carry.
4 + 4 = 8
Keep the second carry: 1
Step 3: Use the tens digit of the original number.
17^2  1
Add the carry: 1
1 + 1 = 2
Answer: 289
