THE NORMAL APPROXIMATION TO THE BINOMIAL DISTRIBUTION

Binomial distribution is determined by n (number of trials) and  p (number of success)

Remember:
Normal approximation should only be used only when n.p and n.q are both greater then 5.

Summary of the Normal Approximation to the Normal Distribution

Binomial
Normal
P(X = a)
P( a – 0.5 < X < a + 0.5)
P(X ≥ a)
P(X > a – 0.5)
P(X > a)
P(X > a + 0.5)
P(X ≤ a)
P(X < a + 0.5)
P(X < a)
P(X < a – 0.5)
